Orval Carlos Sibelius - Recovery Tapes

Clapping Music / Clap026 / 10" Vinyl (blue) / 10€
lire en français
December 31, 2010. This is New Year’s Eve. Orval Carlos Sibelius is experiencing intense boredom in the small cashier’s cubicle of the cinema he’s working at. He strums a little guitar and starts composing a song.

January 1, 2011. The song is finished. It’s called “Dead Slug”.

January 9, 2011. Orval starts recording “Dead Slug” at home, on his old, dusty 4 track cassette which he’s been using since the 90s. While he’s at it, he starts laying the foundations of another song called “Sientelo”.

January 22, 2011 Orval’s grandmother turns 100. Orval pays her a visit. He plays her “La Java Bleue” four times in a row. Inside, he’s bustling with ideas for new songs to be recorded.

February 1, 2011. For more than a month now, Orval Carlos Sibelius has been recording a new record in secret. During the daytime, he projects movies and daydreams about songs. At night, he records them, using his old effects pedals, which reminds him of the good old days when he made music under the moniker Snark. In a nutshell, he’s rediscovering the freedom and excitation of immediate composing, instant recording and sound manipulation. The only trouble is, in 28 days, Orval will be leaving for Mali, a trip he’d decided to make just before Christmas to get over a sad ending love story. He hadn’t planned that an album was about to be born. A time trial thus begins: he has to finish recording and mixing all the songs before he leaves because, he’s sure of it, he will be abducted by AQMI in Mali, and probably die there. His musical testament needs to be finished before he leaves.

February 27, 2011. The album is finished, mixing and all. And Orval has made up his mind about the format, too: it will be a 10” vinyl record, with 15 minutes of music on each side.

February 28, 2011: Orval leaves for Mali.

March 28, 2011: Orval is back from Mali. He’s alive. The album will be out on Clapping Music in June, and will be called “Recovery Tapes”.
